NUMBER SIX (6-8)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) The number 6 symbolizes man and human weakness, the evils of Satan and the manifestation of sin. Man was created on the sixth day. Men are appointed 6 days to labor. A Hebrew slave was to serve 6 years and be released in the 7th year. Six years were appointed for the land to be sown and harvested. The number 6 is associated with Satan in his temptation of Jesus. It is interesting to note what other mention(s) for 6 can be found in the Bible.

1. The six words for MAN

a) Six words are used for man in the Scriptures, with four of them found in the Old Testament and two found in the New Testament. The first word used for mankind is ad-dahm, Strong's Concordance #H120. It means man as a human being, having regard to his being created, and to his earthly origin. This is the word used of Messiah as the "Son of Man."

i) Genesis 1:26, "Let us make man."
ii) Genesis 2:7, "God formed man of the dust of the ground."
iii) Genesis 3:24, "So He drove out the man."
iv) Isaiah 2:11, "The lofty looks of man shall be humbled."
v) Isaiah 2:17, "The loftiness of man shall be bowed down."
vi) Isaiah 2:9, "The mean man boweth down."
vii) Isaiah 2:9, "The great man humbleth himself."
viii) Isaiah 5:15, "The mighty man shall be humbled."
ix) 2Samuel 7:19, "Is this the manner of man, O LORD God?"
x) Psalm 8:4, "What is man that Thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that Thou visitest him?"

b) The second word for man in God's word is Ish, Strong's #H376. This word defines man as strong and vigorous of mind and body. Man with some degree of pre-eminence of strength and endowment.

i) Zechariah 6:12, "Behold the man whose name is the Branch."
ii) Psalm 22:6, "I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people."
iii) Psalm 25:12, "What man is he that feareth the LORD?"
iv) Psalm 39:11, "When Thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity: surely every man is vanity."
v) Psalm 90 Title, "The man of God."

c) The third word is Enosh, Strong's #H582. This word for man denotes a weak man, as mortal and subject to suffering and death; the heir of corruption.

i) Psalm 8:4, "What is man that Thou art mindful of him? or the son of man"
ii) Psalm 73:5, "They are not in trouble as other men."
iii) Psalm 103:15, "As for man, his days are as grass."The fourth word

d) The fourth word is Gehver, Strong's #H1397. This word means a strong man, a man of might and valor. Man as distinct from God (Job 22:2), and from a woman or wife (Proverbs 6:34).

i) Zechariah 13:7, "Awake, O sword, against . . . the man that is My fellow, saith the LORD of Hosts."
ii) Exodus 10:11, "Go now, ye that are men."
iii) Exodus 12:37, "Six hundred thousand on foot that were men."
iv) Psalm 52:7, "Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength."
v) Jeremiah 17:5, "Cursed be the man that trusteth in man"
vi) Jeremiah 17:7, "Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD."

e) Then in the New Testament we have the two words anthröpos, Strong's #G444, which is used in the New Testament and means the same as ad-dahm above and anër, Strong's #G435, which is used in the New Testament and means the same as Ish above. It is worthy of note that these four Hebrew words are each used of the Messiah, and that the Holy Spirit has revealed a blessing for each in and through the man Christ Jesus.

i) Adam, Psalm 32:2, "Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity."
ii) Ish, Psalm 1:1, "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful."
iii) Enosh, Job 5:17, "Happy is the man whom God correcteth, therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty."
iv) Gehver, Psalm 94:12, "Blessed is the man whom Thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of Thy law."
