III. Jesus' last week, suffering and death

1. False witnesses against Christ

a) Reference: Psalms 27:12, 35:11

i) 12 Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries; For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence. (Psalms 27:12 NKJV)

ii) 11 Fierce witnesses rise up; They ask me things that I do not know. (Psalms 35:11 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: Matthew 26:59-61; Mark 14:55-58

i) 59 Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’” (Matthew 26:59-61 NKJV)

ii) 55 Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. 56 For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.

57 Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.’” (Mark 14:55-58 NKJV)
 
2. Won't not defend himself against accusations

a) Reference: Isaiah 53:7

i) He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth. (Isaiah 53:7 NKJV)


b) Fulfillment: Mark 15:3-5, Matthew 27:13-14

i) And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing. Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!” But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled. (Mark 15:3-35 NKJV)

ii) 13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14 But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly. (Matthew 27:13-14 NKJV)
 
3. Satan will bruise his "heel"

a) Reference: Genesis 3:15

i) 15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.” (Genesis 3:15 NKJV)


b) Fulfillment: John 19:18; John 12:31-33

i) 18 where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. (John 19:18 NKJV)

ii) 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” 33 This He said, signifying by what death He would die. (John 12:31-22 NKJV)
