2. Pashhur

a) When the prophet Jeremiah was heard prophesing that God was going to "bring upon this city all the evil with which I threatened it, because they have stiffened their necks and have not obeyed My words." The cheif officer in the house of the Lord, Pashhur, had Jeremiah scourged and put in the stocks.

b) Jeremiah was released the next day and told Pashhur that he and all the members of his household shall go into exile in babylon. In 597 B.C., Babylon put down Judah's rebellion, and exiled its leading citizens. In 587 another rebellion led to the fall of Jerusalem, and more people were exiled. Pashhur means "destruction all around."
