THE WAY OF SALVATION | REPENTANCE

1. The way of Salvation

a) Christ's death on the cross is the ground of God's wonderful plan of salvation. It was completely necessary and at the same time perfectly sufficient.

b) There are four words in the Bible which further tell about God's work in saving men. These are: Election, Predestination, Calling, and Adoption. We will also think of two words which tell about man's part in God's plan of salvation: Repentance, and Faith.

2. What is Repentance?

a) In the Old Testament to repent means to be sorry for what you have done. In the New Testament it means to change your mind. Sometimes we read that God repented. This means that He changed His thoughts toward man.

b) When I repent, I change my thoughts:

@1. about sin. I see that it is hatred and rebellion against God.

@2. about God. I now understand that He is a friend.

@3. about Christ.  I now see Him as altogether lovely, the chiefest of ten thousand, Song of Solomon 5:10, 16.

c) God commands all men to repent, Acts 17:30.

d) His goodness leads us to repentance, Romans 2:4.

e) The Lord Jesus Christ calls men to repent, Luke 5:32.

f) Repentance leads to:

@1. forgiveness, Luke 24:47, Acts 5:31;

@2. good works, Luke 3:8;

@3. baptism, Luke 3:3.
