SEVEN UTTERANCES: JOHN 19:28

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Seven Utterances

a) The Seven Utterances of Jesus, while he was dying on the cross, have been a subject of meditation for all Christians.

b) Here is one of the utterances.

2. “I Am Thirsty”

John 19:28
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, *said, “I am thirsty.”

a) In this utterance we see the suffering of Jesus. If we think that the Son of God was perhaps exercising some power by which he could avoid enduring the pain, we know we are mistaken.

b) Jesus complains of feeling one of the agonies of crucifixion — a terrible thirst: "My strength is dried up like a broken clay pot, and my tongue sticks to my jaws" (Psalms 22:15).

c) It is part of the Christian belief that we have our "salvation through sufferings" which Jesus endured to bring many sons to glory (Hebrews 2:10).
